The Driver

4.5

A few months later, Ben was asked to go to the downtown office for another meeting. The weather was surprisingly warm for an early winter day, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.

This time, on the train, no one sat beside Ben, and even though any color from the trees had departed, he enjoyed the emptiness of the forest as the train sped through the preserve.

Even the depressed towns seemed a little brighter as the train went from station to station.

Arriving in the caverns of the downtown train terminal, Ben departed the train and, as usual, walked at the rear of the passengers making their way to the street. He opened his ride-sharing app, entered his office destination, and waited a few seconds for the car description to pop up.

“Your driver will be Richard. They will be driving a 2015 gold Toyota Camry. Richard’s rating is 4.5. Enjoy your ride!”

“Hmm,” thought Ben, “I guess someone was honest when they rated him.”

Ben pressed the “Cancel Ride” button, walked outside the train terminal, and as the morning sun warmed his face, softly said to himself, “It’s a nice day for a walk. I’ve got time.”
